Distinguished and Famous people from Mount Dandenong

🎨 William Ricketts

Sculptor William Ricketts spent much of his life at Mount Dandenong creating an outdoor sanctuary among the forest. From the 1930s until his death in 1993, he placed ceramic figures among rocks, trees and ferns, making the setting part of the artwork. His sculptures expressed his personal spiritual ideas and his concern about the destruction of the natural world. Many depict Aboriginal people; they should be understood as Ricketts’ own interpretation, not an authoritative account of Aboriginal beliefs. His unusual life’s work gives Mount Dandenong a cultural landmark quite unlike a conventional gallery.

🖌️ Arthur Streeton

Arthur Streeton made his home at Olinda, beside Mount Dandenong, and found subjects in the surrounding hills and his own garden. One of the leading figures of Australian Impressionism, he is celebrated for paintings that capture light, distance and the heat of the landscape. His Dandenong Ranges years brought a different intimacy: the artist also planned and tended his garden at Longacres. Following his wife’s death in 1938, he retired to Olinda, where he died in 1943.

🖼️ Sir Joseph Burke

Sir Joseph Burke made Mount Dandenong his home while leading an unusually busy academic and cultural life in Melbourne. After taking weekday rooms at Trinity College in 1974, he continued returning to the mountain on weekends, including after retirement. As the University of Melbourne’s inaugural fine-arts professor, he helped establish art history as an academic discipline and gave public lectures valued for humour as well as learning. His interests extended from painting to industrial design and heritage. Mount Dandenong’s association is a documented home, providing a quieter domestic setting behind the committees, lectures and collections of a very public career.
